Just in: Saudi Arabia introduces mandatory polio vaccination for Nigerian pilgrims/Passengers

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has directed all qualified Tour Operator companies for the 2025 Hajj to comply with a newly introduced mandatory polio vaccination of Nigerian pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia for the 2025 Hajj. NAHCON, in a letter dated 14th March and addressed to all qualified Companies for the 2025 Hajj said “I am directed to bring to your notice a recent directive from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which mandates that all airlines operating in Saudi Arabia and conveying passengers from Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Pakistan must ensure that passengers present a mandatory valid polio vaccination certificate as a condition for transit in the country” NAHCON informed the companies that the “measure was introduced by Saudi Authorities as part of an effort to safeguard visitors and residents in the Kingdom, following the detection of the first polio case of 2025 in Pakistan.

The letter, signed by the Assistant Director in charge of the Tour Operator’s Division, highlighted the conditions to be met to include that the certificate must: a) Be at least four (4) weeks before travel, b) Not exceed six months in validity. It further urges Companies to “ensure that all passengers bound for Saudi Arabia “undergo thorough screening at their point of departure to prevent any embarrassment “
